The sonorous toll of the Dark Bell began in Cathedral Square that night. The mournful cry of the bells in the square towers flowed out and down the great gothic edifice, rushing down the narrow streets and echoing off of the canals. The sound carried down every alley, pursuing the silence like a wailing spirit unleashed.
